If your only experience of Icelandic music is Sigur Rós and Björk, you probably think it’s all about being deliberately obscure. Those who’ve heard Mínus will know differently. They’ll know that these guys are rockers through and through, and that they can make noise like the best of them without compromising on tunes. They’ll also know that, even though it’s been a long wait since 03’s ‘Halldór Laxness’ album, Mínus can still deliver the goods. The band announce their return with opener ‘Cat’s Eyes’, a groovetastic Motörhead / QOTSA crossover that’s rock ‘n’ roll dynamite. An abundance of fast and furious riffs follow, interspersed with enough surprises to make things interesting. So ‘Throwaway Angel’ keeps you guessing as it switches from beautiful to brutal, while ‘Rip It Up’ nods to their punk heritage. Elsewhere, heavy-as-hell moments during tracks like ‘Rhythm Cure’ apparently pay homage to one possible inspiration behind the album’s title – Pantera’s ‘The Great Southern Trendkill’. Later, ‘Futurist’ verges on being upbeat and uplifting with a bright, poppy chorus. The overall result is eclectic, but subtly so, and shows that Mínus are far more than mere noise-mongers. Writing music that’s accessible but also has depth is no easy task, but Mínus continue to master it.
