Londoners Cry For Silence have been kicking around the scene for nigh-on eight years now. During that time, they’ve honed their brand of hardcore into a fully-fledged metallic brute, full of incisor-sharp riffery and machine-gun percussion, executed with military precision and threaded throughout with a catchy-as-crabs melody. But while the five-piece aren’t exactly breaking the mould of the typical metal-heavy hardcore outfits that continue to swamp the scene, when it comes to tracks that lodge into the grey matter and refuse to budge, ‘The Glorious Dead’ is more than capable of running with the big boys. Opener ‘Nightmare’ really sums up what Cry For Silence are about: punishing verses juxtaposed against a spookily haunting and catchy chorus, plus a gloriously ghoulish breakdown. It’s tempting to think they’ve shown all their cards during the first round, especially since ‘A World Benign’ – complete with typical ‘hardcore’ breakdown – doesn’t quite cut it in the same way. Having said that, the likes of ‘Some Kind Of Wonderful’ and the subtle approach, diverse textures and maturity of ‘Beneath The Storm’ and ‘Into The Sun’ make this Visible Noise debut one to note. Loaded with passionate outpourings, crunching riffs and searing solos, glorious is what you get.
