Bullet For My Valentine’s second offering is exactly what you would expect from the band: 11 heavy new tracks, heavily referencing their record collections to create another modern spin on the classic metal formulas of old. Future anthems like ‘Scream Aim Fire’, ‘Waking The Demon’ and ‘End Of Days’ all tip the cap to either Hetfield or Murray in some way, while cleverly managing to stay at least one homage away from imitation at all times. More obviously than previous efforts Matt Tuck’s vocal sits within the mix of each track, and because his difficulties in this department have been so well documented, it is hard not to scrutinise the album with this in mind. While it could be due to natural progression and more streamlined arrangement, it is hard not to wonder whether his voice is being purposefully hidden at times as it struggles to escape the compression. However, the slight vocal submission does give ample opportunity to appreciate how the band have grown musically; the riffing is tighter, the transitions more effective, and the songs have a new pace and directness to them. If they can prove live that vocals are no problem, this album should easily carry them through the difficult second record phase of their career with aplomb. If.
